Larry Wicherham and members of the Alpha Association continue to work with the college and we wanted to share an update on the status of the chapter. The short update is that the provisional chapter (what we used to call colonies) was terminated. We hope to revisit starting a new chapter, but that won’t be for a year or two at the earliest.
The fraternity’s effort to re-establish a chapter at W&J failed. The field secretary they sent worked hard, but did not have adequate support from Lexington. At the same time Lexington ended the effort, W&J was welcoming the new president Elizabeth MacLeod Walls. This was poor timing as the president is a supporter of Greek life, is the mother of a Fiji, and was looking forward to seeing Alpha chapter re-established. She was in touch with the folks at Lexington, who promised to reconsider the decision in time.
In the past year, the college has accepted the largest incoming class in its history, more than 600 students, and the fraternities are enjoying recruiting success. The college administration has shared these facts with Lexington in the hope of generating interest and support for a new chapter. Stay tuned.
